BOHIN upholstery tacks are designed to keep your fabrics taut and perfectly fixed during your upholstery work.
How to use them: upholstery repair of an armchair
Renovating an armchair is a real art that combines precision, know-how and good tools. Among the essential elements of this renovation, the choice of materials and padding techniques is crucial.
Whether you opt for foam or horsehair padding, BOHIN upholstery tacks are perfect allies for fixing the support fabrics and guaranteeing an impeccable finish. Here is an example of a detailed guide to the upholstery repair of an armchair, by combining foam and horsehair padding techniques.
1. Disassembling the Chair :
Removing the old fabric: Start by removing the existing fabric, staples, or old nails (hooves). Use a staple remover to carefully remove anything that held the old fabric together.
Inspecting the frame: Check that the frame of the chair is stable and undamaged. If repairs are needed (for example, tightening screws or wood joints) or surface treatments, do so before starting the upholstery.
2. Foam Upholstery :
Cut the foam: If the chair requires new upholstery, start by cutting the foam to the shape and size that fits the seat, back, and armrests. You can use high-density foam to ensure good comfort and durability.
Attach the foam: Place the foam on the frame of the chair. Use a special foam adhesive to hold the foam in place before attaching the support fabric.
3. Horsehair Padding: traditional upholstery
- Strapping: Attach the crossed straps to the bottom of your chair. Attach the straps one by one, respecting the same tension for each strap using the BOHIN hoeing tools and a strap puller.
- Sewing and hoisting the springs: Attach the springs to the chair with hoisting rope and large seeds.
- Installing the strong canvas, sewing the springs: the strong canvas overhangs the springs, keeps them fixed to the structure using stitches made using curved needles and sewing string, and provides support for the horsehair filling.
- Horsehair: Horsehair is a natural fiber used to provide support and firmness to the padding. Arrange the layers of horsehair (which can be cut to the size of the different parts of the chair) on the foam or directly on the wooden structure to reinforce the seat and backrest. Secure the horsehair in a burlap case.
- Packaging: secure the horsehair in a burlap case. Use linen thread to hold the layers of horsehair in place. This ensures that the horsehair will remain well positioned throughout use. The skewers and a horsehair puller allow you to homogenize the horsehair in its packaging.
- Ground stitch: sewing the packaging and the horsehair filling keeps the horsehair evenly homogenized.
- Whitening: apply white canvas, first maintaining an even tension of the fabric using the BOHIN skewers. Secure it using seeds.
5. Laying the fabric
Once the filling is securely fixed to the structure, you can move on to applying the embellishment fabric (the visible fabric that will give the final aesthetic to your chair). Cut the fabric with a sufficient margin to cover the edges and ensure a clean finish.
Make sure to maintain a regular and uniform tension of the embellishment fabric over the entire surface of the chair using the BOHIN upholstery tacks.
6. Finishing
If your chair has decorative metal nails, you can place them around the chair to add an aesthetic touch. Make sure to hammer them in without damaging the fabric.
7. Final Check
Make sure the chair is comfortable and the padding is well distributed.
