Milliners needles are generally used for building, gathering and serging. Milliners needles are longer than regular sewing needles. They have the same round eye and point as the sewing needle. They are also used to make pleats. Their name comes from their use by milliners to make hats. It's their length that makes them so useful for basting. You can easily make large stitches and go very fast!
The numbering corresponds to the size of each needle, n°3 being the longest and thickest and n°10 the shortest and thinnest for the same needle family. Numbers are selected according to fabric size and thread used.
Why make a basting?
As a sewing beginner, you might think that basting is a waste of time. But there are many advantages! A basted fabric is easier to sew because it's better held together. It's also more comfortable and safer to try out a work in progress than using pins. For fine fabrics such as viscose, which are also very slippery, the basting allows the seam to hold throughout the final seam. On the other hand, for very thick fabrics, especially tailoring, the basting allows the elements to take their place and keep them there, despite the thickness, which is sometimes difficult to pin. Basting makes sewing easy!
